 What is Matariki?

Matariki is the Maori name for the cluster of stars named Pleiades. It is the Maori new year. The stars start to disappear in late April. Then they appear in mid-winter. It was the time to hunt for fish and birds. It is a time to fly kites.

What does Matariki mean?

What is the tale of matariki?

Matariki means the Eyes of God\ little eyes.

According to the myth, Ranginui the (Sky Father) and Papatuanuku the (Earth Mother) were separated by their children. Tawhirimatea the God of the wind tore his eyes and threw them into the heavens. Matariki is a time to plant, go fishing, and mourn the dead.

What are the Matariki celebrations in the past and today?

They stopped in the 1940’s but were revived in the Early 2000’s. After many years, more people celebrate Matariki.
